This year we have decided to build on our experiences
of last year and once again hold a peace vigil in the community instead of
holding a traditional carol service. We thought long and hard last year about
how best to connect with local people at Christmas and came up with the vigil
idea which went down very well. This year there will be two vigils held on
December the 18th, one at a local community centre in the heart of a
local housing estate and the other at a new venue – along a stretch of the New
River which runs within a few metres of the church. The New River was originally
built in 1613 to bring clean water to the people of Islington – Wonderful story
wonderful setting for a Christian Peace Vigil.
The New River runs at the bottom of my road just a few metres away and I cross over it every time I go to the gym. My husband and I walked the New River path from Enfield to Ally Pally during the summer and we are determined to make it all the way to central London next year. I will be thinking of the Peace Vigil as my church celebrates with a more traditional carol service this Sunday.
